Tranforming Care with Social Robots

by Marco van der Hoeven

Robots are becoming valuable teammates for care workers, offering crucial support in their daily tasks. One of these variants is the social robot. A smart example of this is the recently introduced Dutch robot Maatje, developed to support individuals with dementia or intellectual disabilities.

Social robot Maatje combines advanced technology with an empathetic approach, aiming to enhance the well-being and interaction between users and their surroundings. Richard Kuijpers, founder of Smartrobotsolutions, explains: “We wanted to create a solution that is not only functional but can also bring a smile to the user’s face.”

The design of Robot Maatje was developed in collaboration with an experienced designer who previously worked for Toverland and the Efteling. The result is a robot with a friendly and familiar appearance, designed to reassure and engage users. “You must avoid making a robot appear scary, as some dolls or clowns can,” Kuijpers explains. “Our goal was a design that is accessible and inviting for everyone.”

Impact

The robot offers a wide range of functionalities. It helps users structure their day by providing reminders for activities such as mealtimes or medication intake. Additionally, the robot engages users through simple questions and games, which provide not only entertainment but also mental stimulation. “One of the most beautiful reactions we witnessed was from a client who hardly spoke anymore but started talking to the robot. That shows the profound impact it can have,” Kuijpers shares.

Robot Maatje is also equipped with advanced sensors, including a radar to detect movement and a stress sensor to monitor the user’s well-being. If irregularities are detected, the robot can automatically alert caregivers. Moreover, the robot can play music, which often helps evoke memories or provide relaxation. “The power of music is incredible,” says Kuijpers. “It can truly touch people and make a difference in their day.”

A Social Project

The production of Robot Maatje takes place in a socially responsible setting, involving individuals with a distance to the labor market in the assembly process. “This project is not just a technological innovation but also a social initiative,” Kuijpers emphasizes. “We aim to create impact on multiple levels.”

The developers are now working on new features, including extended voice control and an expansion of the product line with other robot forms, such as a dog. “We continue to innovate to meet the needs of our users,” Kuijpers says. “Our mission is to make technology human and truly contribute to daily life. Technology should not only be smart but also meaningful.”
