Sidewalk robot deliveries for DoorDash customers in Los Angeles and Chicago

by Marco van der Hoeven

DoorDash and Coco Robotics have expanded their partnership to introduce sidewalk robot deliveries for DoorDash customers in Los Angeles and Chicago. This development follows a pilot program conducted earlier in Helsinki, Finland, through Wolt, DoorDash’s international division.

The U.S. launch involves approximately 600 participating merchants across the two cities. Eligible customers using the DoorDash platform may receive their orders via Coco’s autonomous sidewalk robots, which are described as emissions-free. Coco Robotics reports that during the pilot phase, over 100,000 deliveries were completed.

The initiative is part of DoorDash’s broader strategy to develop a multi-modal delivery network, integrating human couriers, drones, and autonomous robots. The company states that this model is designed to address cost efficiency, scalability, and environmental concerns associated with last-mile logistics.

DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics and automation unit, is leading the development of autonomous delivery partnerships. In addition to its work with Coco, DoorDash Labs has partnered with Wing to facilitate drone deliveries in the United States, following earlier trials in Australia. Coco Robotics, which began operations in Los Angeles in 2020, has since expanded to Chicago, Miami, and Helsinki. Its current fleet comprises more than 1,000 delivery robots.
