Samsung Robot gets Google Gemini AI

by Marco van der Hoeven

Samsung and Google will integrate Google Cloud’s generative AI technology into Ballie, Samsung’s newly developed home AI companion robot. The announcement was made at Cloud Next ’25 in Las Vegas. Gemini will enable  the robot to support natural, conversational interactions and provide real-time assistance in home environments. Samsung stated that Ballie will be available to consumers in the United States and South Korea starting in the summer of 2025.

According to the companies, Ballie will combine Gemini’s capabilities with Samsung’s own language models to interpret a range of sensory inputs including voice, visual data from its onboard camera, and environmental sensors. This functionality is intended to allow Ballie to adapt to user needs and offer personalized support, such as adjusting lighting, managing schedules, or offering clothing suggestions based on user prompts.

Samsung indicated that the robot may also assist in health-related contexts. In one example, the company said Ballie could respond to user input related to fatigue by providing recommendations sourced via Google Search on improving energy levels or sleep habits.

The announcement follows the earlier deployment of Gemini on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 smartphone series in 2024. Both companies characterized this new step as part of a broader effort to extend generative AI integration across a wider array of consumer devices.

Executives from both companies emphasized the strategic nature of the collaboration. Yongjae Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, described the partnership as an initiative to expand the role of AI in personal and home settings. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, stated that the partnership illustrates Samsung’s approach to implementing generative AI at scale.
