Robot for Offshore Environments

by Pieter Werner

SMD, specializing in underwater technology , has partnered with Beam, a technology firm, to advance the deployment of autonomous vehicles in challenging offshore environments. The collaboration centers on integrating Beam’s Pathfinder software with SMD’s Quantum EV remotely operated vehicle (ROV), aiming to enhance offshore wind farm maintenance efficiency.

Beam has acquired the Quantum EV, a high-performance ROV, to equip it with its SubSLAM subsea perception system. SubSLAM, powered by the Pathfinder software, offers advanced localization, artificial intelligence, and mapping capabilities. This integration will enable autonomous piloting in deeper and more demanding offshore conditions.

According to John McCann, SMD’s ROV sales and business development manager, the collaboration reflects shared ambitions for innovation. He highlighted SubSLAM’s capabilities, such as real-time 3D mapping and data collection, noting that the combination with Quantum EV unlocks new potential for autonomous operations in high-current environments.

Simon Adams, program director at Beam, emphasized the significance of the partnership in advancing renewable energy initiatives. He noted that autonomous vehicle solutions help reduce operational costs, increase efficiency, and address workforce challenges within the sector. Adams further stated that Quantum EV’s stability and position-keeping capabilities enable the Pathfinder software and SubSLAM to operate effectively in harsh conditions, expanding their application to more offshore wind farms.

Marc Coull, Beam’s program director for service innovation, praised Quantum EV’s design, which includes enhanced payload capacity, space for intervention equipment, and high-speed performance. He acknowledged SMD’s commitment to innovation and collaboration in supporting the growth of renewable energy technology.
