Pudu joins Humanoid Robot Race

by Marco van der Hoeven

Pudu Robotics has launched its first full-sized bipedal humanoid robot, the PUDU D9. Developed by the Pudu X-Lab, the PUDU D9 is the third product introduced by the team in 2024, following the semi-humanoid robot PUDU D7 and the PUDU DH11 dexterous robotic hand. The robot is designed to advance commercially viable embodied intelligence and is expected to be available for pre-sale soon.

The PUDU D9 stands at 170 cm tall, weighs 65 kg, and features 42 degrees of freedom across its joints with a maximum joint torque of 352 Nm. It incorporates the PUDU DH11 dexterous hand, enabling human-like bipedal walking and dual-hand task performance. Demonstrations have shown the robot navigating obstacles, climbing slopes, and performing ground cleaning tasks using the PUDU SH1. The robot’s design is guided by a “Born to Serve” philosophy, focusing on practical functionality and human-like capabilities for a variety of applications.

The PUDU D9’s mobility system allows it to walk at speeds of up to 2 m/s on flat surfaces and traverse challenging environments such as stairs and slopes. Its advanced algorithms support lightweight gait control, enabling quiet operation in human environments. A visual semantic navigation system, equipped with high-accuracy sensors, enables real-time 3D mapping, self-positioning, and autonomous route planning. The robot is also equipped with two robotic arms with seven degrees of freedom each, capable of lifting over 20 kg.

The integration of the PUDU DH11 dexterous hand allows for the execution of precise and delicate tasks, facilitated by reinforcement learning and a proprietary AI framework that enables complex task planning based on large datasets. The robot’s interaction system incorporates high-precision visual, tactile, force, and auditory sensors, allowing it to engage in multimodal, human-like interactions.

The introduction of the PUDU D9 extends Pudu Robotics’ product lineup, which now includes specialized, semi-humanoid, and humanoid robots. The company aims to strengthen its position in the service robotics market by pursuing innovations in robotic AI, mobility, and operational technology. According to Felix Zhang, founder and CEO of Pudu Robotics, the company is focused on addressing customer needs and advancing humanoid and semi-humanoid robots to enhance accessibility to robotic services.
