NEC has introduced a facial recognition system that identifies people even when they are wearing masks. The Japanese technology firm had already been working on this system to meet the needs of allergy sufferers who wear masks when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
The system sees when a person is wearing a mask, and scans the parts of the face hat are not covered up, such as the eyes and surrounding areas, to verify the subject’s identity. This only works when a photo of the uncovered face is available in advance. NEC claims verification takes less than one second, with an accuracy rate of more than 99.9%.
