New Driving Robot Launched for Vehicle Testing

by Marco van der Hoeven

Humanetics has launched the DrivingRobot modular (DRm), a system designed for vehicle testing, particularly Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). The DRm provides a flexible and cost-efficient solution for testing across a range of vehicle types, including passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, vans, buses, and heavy-duty trucks. Its modular design allows for adaptability, meeting the demands of truck and passenger vehicle testing.

The DRm system consists of components such as the SteeringRobot modular (SRm), PedalRobot modular (PRm), and a Steering Wheel Adapter, which can be used individually or together. It accommodates various vehicle sizes and geometries, making it suitable for real-world driving conditions, including emergency maneuvers. The system is designed to meet safety testing protocols from Euro NCAP and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The focus on heavy goods vehicle (HGV) safety is central to the DRm’s development, addressing the risks associated with these vehicles. The modular design offers high torque and precise control, making it effective for ADAS testing under evolving global safety standards. The NHTSA recently introduced a new requirement for automatic emergency braking (AEB) in all passenger vehicles by 2029, while Euro NCAP is finalizing heavy-duty truck testing protocols.

Mark Westen, President of Humanetics Safety, stated that the DRm system aims to improve the efficiency and flexibility of vehicle testing. Its tool-free installation and adaptable design streamline the testing process for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and testing facilities.
