Milrem Robotics has secured a contract with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces to provide three THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). These vehicles, tailored for various operational tasks such as supply transportation and intelligence gathering, are integrated with the Milrem Intelligent Functions Kit (MIFIK). This technology enables autonomous navigation both on and off-road, with capabilities for mission planning and behavior settings during operations.
The introduction of THeMIS UGVs into the Japanese defense forces aims to enhance military capabilities and operational safety by leveraging unmanned technologies to reduce human casualties and achieve tactical advantages. Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, emphasized the strategic importance of UGVs in modernizing defense mechanisms and their role in amplifying combat effectiveness.
The acquisition is part of Japan’s Rapid Acquisition Program, initiated by the Ministry of Defense, to expedite the integration of advanced technologies into its military operations. Milrem Robotics has pledged comprehensive support to ensure swift deployment of these systems in Japan.
THeMIS UGVs have been deployed by military forces in 16 countries, including eight NATO members—Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the UK, and the US. The vehicles are also actively used by Ukrainian forces in their ongoing conflict with Russia.
