Milrem Military Robots get Starlink Connection

by Marco van der Hoeven

Milrem Robotics and AEC Skyline have integrated Starlink satellite communications into the THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), enabling remote control over extensive distances. This integration is intended to enhance safety and efficiency in military operations by allowing operators to manage the UGVs from secure locations far from the battlefield.

The upgraded THeMIS Cargo CASEVAC, now equipped with Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) capabilities, will be showcased at Eurosatory 2024 in Paris, from June 17 to 21. The THeMIS UGV is currently in use by Ukrainian forces for various tasks, including route clearance and casualty evacuation.

The satellite communication system facilitates real-time data transmission and command relay, regardless of the UGV’s position on the battlefield. Raul Rikk, Capability Development Director at Milrem Robotics, emphasized the significance of this development in enhancing remote operation and situational awareness, thereby reducing the risks associated with direct human involvement in combat zones.

Stef Have, CEO of AEC Skyline, highlighted the ongoing collaboration between AEC Skyline and Milrem Robotics since 2021, expressing pride in their role as an integration partner for new technologies, including the SATCOM-based capability.

AEC Skyline, based in the Netherlands, specializes in systems integration and Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT). Their portfolio includes C4ISR and Cyber services and products such as advanced air-ground datalinks, MANET tactical radios, LTE and SATCOM solutions, as well as combat cloud, visual collaboration, GEOINT, and sensor technologies.
