LG Electronics unveils Self-Driving AI Home Hub

by Marco van der Hoeven

LG Electronics has unveiled its Self-Driving AI Home Hub at ROSCon 2024, held in Odense, Denmark, from October 21 to 23. The company introduced an open Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling developers to customize and enhance the functionality of LG’s smart home appliances. This SDK provides access to open APIs and programming tools, facilitating greater control and allowing developers to expand the software capabilities of the AI-powered hub.

At ROSCon, a conference dedicated to Robot Operating System (ROS) technologies, LG’s booth featured demonstrations of the Self-Driving AI Home Hub’s capabilities, such as storytelling, small talk, and reading sessions through Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Attendees were also able to interact with the open SDK, creating custom applications for the hub in real-time.

The SDK, designed to support standardized interfaces through ROS 2, is now available on LG’s developer platform. This platform includes a community space for collaboration, an app marketplace for sharing developer-created apps, and additional resources. LG is actively seeking collaboration with institutions and companies, offering engineering samples for joint development projects and pursuing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to further expand its open platform ecosystem.

A highlight of the conference was a presentation by Baek Seung-min, head of LG’s Advanced Robotics Lab, focusing on the architecture and performance optimization of the Self-Driving AI Home Hub’s software. LG aims to foster collaborative efforts within the developer community to enhance its home appliance technology, aligning with the company’s goal to lead the expansion of the smart home ecosystem.
