Large-Scale LiDAR Deployment at Dallas Fort Worth Airport

by Marco van der Hoeven

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has awarded a $17.2 million contract to Outsight for the large-scale deployment of its LiDAR-based monitoring platform. The system, selected through a competitive process involving four proposals and approved by the airport’s Board of Directors, will be used to monitor real-time flows of passengers and vehicles across the airport using LiDAR technology.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, uses laser pulses to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional information about objects and environments. In the context of airport operations, LiDAR sensors provide continuous spatial data that allow for detailed analysis of movement patterns. This enables airport authorities to track passenger density, queue formations, and vehicle traffic without relying on camera-based or intrusive technologies.

The adoption of LiDAR at DFW is intended to support operational decision-making by identifying potential congestion points and allowing staff to respond to disruptions before they impact airport services. Unlike traditional monitoring systems, LiDAR does not rely on facial recognition or personal data, offering a non-intrusive approach to situational awareness that complies with privacy standards.

Outsight’s platform integrates LiDAR data into a broader Spatial AI system that processes and visualizes flow dynamics in real time. This deployment builds on the company’s previous implementations in other international airports and aligns with a broader trend toward sensor-based automation in aviation infrastructure.
