Humanoid Robot Ameca Impresses Audience at Cornwall Tech Festival

by Marco van der Hoeven

A humanoid robot designed in Cornwall impressed attendees during its first public interaction at the Cornwall Festival of Tech. The robot, named Ameca, engaged with participants in a sold-out event titled Ameca: A Robot’s Journey to Creation at Truro College.

Around 250 visitors attended the festival, which featured tech workshops, exhibits, and talks. Although Ameca has previously appeared at global events, this was the first opportunity for the local public to experience the advanced humanoid robot up close. Many spectators expressed interest in its fluid movements and realistic facial expressions, while some found its human-like gestures slightly unsettling.

Developed by Falmouth-based company Engineered Arts, Ameca is recognized for its ability to communicate through sophisticated facial expressions and natural body language. Will Jackson, CEO of Engineered Arts, explained that the robot’s design prioritizes communication, utilizing artificial intelligence and modular mechanics to create a more interactive experience.

Unlike some humanoid robots that attempt hyper-realistic appearances, Ameca has been deliberately designed to maintain a balance between human-like features and a distinctly robotic aesthetic. Jackson noted that making a robot appear too lifelike can provoke discomfort, a phenomenon known as the ‘uncanny valley.’

Engineered Arts has previously showcased Ameca at international tech events, including CES in Las Vegas, where the humanoid robot demonstrated its ability to combine artificial intelligence with adaptive learning and natural movement. The company’s ongoing innovations aim to position Ameca as a versatile platform for AI research and interactive human-machine communication.
