The 2024 Paris Olympics opening highlighted robotics technology as paraplegic tennis player Kevin Piette participated in the Olympic torch relay using a robotic exoskeleton. Developed by Paris-based engineering firm Wandercraft, the exoskeleton allowed Piette, who lost the use of his legs in a car accident 11 years ago, to walk with the torch.
Wandercraft, established in 2012, focuses on creating exoskeletons for both medical and everyday purposes. Their leading model, Atalante X, is employed in rehabilitation centers globally to help patients regain movement.
A representative from Wandercraft explained that self-balancing robotics is a significant challenge in the field. The company aims to address this by designing devices that enable people with mobility impairments to walk. Although Piette didn’t qualify to compete in the Paralympics, he was thrilled to be part of the Olympic torch ceremony.
