Case: AI-Vision in Packaging Solutions

by Pieter Werner

Ranpak Holdings, provider of paper-based packaging and automation solutions, has announced a partnership with Rabot, a San Francisco-based developer of Vision AI technology. The multi-year commercial agreement will integrate Rabot’s AI platform into Ranpak’s packaging solutions, focusing on optimizing warehouse packing operations. The rollout will begin in North America, with plans to expand globally.

Rabot’s AI platform leverages camera systems and proprietary models to provide real-time data on packing, returns, and inbound processes. The system offers insights aimed at improving packing workflows, reducing material waste, and enhancing quality assurance. According to Ranpak, the technology has the potential to improve quality assurance by up to 60% and increase labor efficiency and productivity by up to 25%.

Ranpak’s Chairman and CEO, Omar Asali, stated, “As companies look for new ways to increase productivity and achieve their sustainability targets, AI-driven solutions like Rabot’s are becoming vital strategic tools.” The partnership aligns with Ranpak’s broader strategy of integrating AI into its sustainable packaging offerings, which already includes products such as the DecisionTower™ quality assurance machine and the FillPak Trident™ automated void-fill system.

Channa Ranatunga, Co-founder and President of Rabot, described the collaboration as a “transformative milestone” for the company, highlighting the opportunity to expand AI-powered fulfillment solutions across Ranpak’s global network.

The companies plan to showcase their integrated solutions at ProMat 2025, where attendees will have the opportunity to observe the new technology in operation.

Founded in 1972, Ranpak develops sustainable packaging solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving supply chain performance. Headquartered in Concord Township, Ohio, the company employs approximately 800 people worldwide. Rabot specializes in AI-driven warehouse operational intelligence, offering solutions designed to enhance workflow efficiency in high-speed, high-volume environments. The company is backed by investors and led by experts with experience from companies including Apple, Tesla, and Google.
