Boston Dynamics has announced new updates for its Spot robots, enhancing their capabilities in industrial automation and facility management. Spot, a quadruped robot deployed in various industries, is now equipped with two key additions: acoustic vibration sensing and laser scanning integration for reality capture. These updates are aimed at improving the efficiency of predictive maintenance and digital twin creation.
The acoustic vibration sensing feature allows Spot to conduct ultrasonic inspections of rotating equipment, such as bearings, detecting early signs of failure before major breakdowns occur. This builds on Spot’s existing abilities in acoustic leak detection, with users typically realizing returns on investment within two years. The Fluke SV600 imager, which Spot uses for both acoustic and ultrasonic inspections, reduces the need for additional sensors while providing comprehensive maintenance insights.
Spot’s reality capture capabilities have also been upgraded through integration with the Leica BLK ARC laser scanner. This enables autonomous, repeatable 3D scans of industrial environments, which are used for tasks such as factory design, equipment installation, and employee training. The data collected can be processed through the company’s Orbit software and integrated into a facility’s existing systems.
Additionally, several enhancements have been made to Spot’s navigation and management systems. These include multi-docking support, enabling Spot to recharge autonomously during longer missions, and updates to Orbit’s alert processing, which streamlines the handling of maintenance alerts. A new Tablet Controller Pro has also been introduced, offering improved ergonomics and durability, while Spot’s operating temperature range has been extended to 55°C, allowing it to operate in more extreme conditions.
These updates aim to increase the utility and range of Spot’s applications across industries, from manufacturing to logistics, by automating complex tasks and providing actionable data for facility management and maintenance planning.
