ArcBest introduces 3D perception technology

by Pieter Werner

Logistics company ArcBest has announced the introduction of Vaux Vision, a 3D perception technology designed to enhance material handling by enabling real-time freight measurement and data capture directly on forklifts. Currently in the pilot phase, Vaux Vision is the latest addition to ArcBest’s suite of technology solutions, alongside enhancements to the Vaux Freight Movement System and Vaux Smart Autonomy.

Vaux Vision transforms forklifts into mobile dimensioners by using strategically placed sensors that activate when freight is picked up. The system captures dimensions, images, and detailed shipment data in real time, providing operators with immediate feedback via a tablet interface while storing data securely in the cloud. It can handle a variety of freight shapes and sizes, extending beyond standard pallets.

Certified by the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP), Vaux Vision features a touchscreen operator display and barcode scanning capabilities. It integrates with Vaux OS and both new and existing weight scales. Additional functionalities include capturing freight photos during pick-up and drop-off to enhance visibility, using AI to assess attributes such as damage, hazardous materials (HazMat), and stackability, and tracking piece IDs or pallet barcodes.

Dennis Anderson, ArcBest’s chief innovation officer, stated that Vaux Vision addresses the growing need for accurate freight dimensions, offering a flexible solution with a lower cost of implementation compared to traditional static dimensioners.

Enhancements to Vaux Freight Movement System

ArcBest has expanded its Vaux Freight Movement System, originally designed to improve efficiency in trailer loading and unloading through the use of the Vaux MP mobile platform. Freight is loaded onto the Vaux MP outside the trailer and then moved inside using a forklift equipped with an MP Coupler. The system enables quick unloading by pulling the entire platform out in one movement. The Vaux MP is available in various sizes and configurations, allowing for optimized trailer loading even with non-stackable products, contributing to reduced truck usage and improved environmental metrics.

New equipment options include a modified MP decking system for stacking previously unstackable items like high-value server equipment, Roller Deck MPs in 26-foot and 10-foot sizes for air cargo ULD containers, and an Automotive Hauler capable of transporting up to four vehicles in a standard trailer. Additional configurations include a Max Width MP for wide freight and a 17-foot MP designed for narrow spaces.

Vaux Smart Autonomy Updates

The company also announced updates to Vaux Smart Autonomy, which integrates autonomous mobile robot (AMR) forklifts and reach trucks with fleet management software. This system automates material handling processes while maintaining human oversight for complex tasks. Vaux Smart Autonomy now includes capabilities for handling larger freight, double-stacked trailer loads, and performing autonomous put-away operations. It also supports stacking on gravity feeds, bulk stacking, and moving automotive racks.
