A3 Releases Vision for a U.S. National Robotics Strategy

by Marco van der Hoeven

The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) has released its proposed framework for a U.S. National Robotics Strategy, presenting a set of policy recommendations to Congress aimed at enhancing the country’s competitiveness in robotics and automation. The proposal calls for the federal government to adopt coordinated efforts to support innovation, economic security, and workforce development in robotics.

A central component of the strategy is the establishment of a dedicated federal Robotics Office and a Robotics Commission composed of representatives from industry and academia. According to A3, these entities would be responsible for developing and coordinating national robotics policy and providing strategic guidance on technology advancement and deployment.

The strategy identifies six core policy areas for federal action. These include the implementation of tax incentives to encourage investment in robotics, promoting the government’s role as an adopter of robotics technologies, expanding workforce training and STEM education initiatives, increasing funding for academic research and public-private innovation partnerships, and updating industry standards for the deployment of AI-integrated robotic systems.

Jeff Burnstein, president of A3, stated that the United States faces a pivotal moment in automation policy and emphasized the importance of prioritizing robotics as part of broader discussions on artificial intelligence.

The organization also recommends forming a cross-government task force to coordinate activities across federal agencies and industry sectors. The proposed Robotics Commission is modeled after previous federal advisory bodies established in areas such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Brendan Schulman, chair of the A3 Advocacy Committee and vice president of policy and government relations at Boston Dynamics, noted that recent advances in AI integration have expanded the role of robotics across various industries. He underscored the urgency of launching a national robotics strategy to address labor challenges and maintain technological leadership.

The strategy document was submitted to lawmakers as part of A3’s ongoing advocacy for federal policies supporting robotics and automation.
