OpenAI Announces o3 AI model

by Marco van der Hoeven

OpenAI has announced that it is conducting internal testing on its latest reasoning AI models, named “o3” and “o3 mini,” as part of its effort to develop more advanced artificial intelligence systems capable of addressing complex tasks. The company plans to release the o3 mini model by the end of January 2025, with the full version of the o3 model following soon after. The announcement follows the launch of OpenAI’s o1 models in September 2024, designed for deeper reasoning and problem-solving across domains such as science, mathematics, and coding.

OpenAI has opened applications for external researchers to trial the o3 models before their official launch. The company, supported by Microsoft’s investment, has played a central role in the growing competition among AI developers since the debut of ChatGPT in late 2022. OpenAI’s growing portfolio and product releases contributed to its $6.6 billion funding round in October 2024. These developments come amid heightened competition from rivals like Google, owned by Alphabet Inc. Earlier this month, Google released the second generation of its Gemini AI model.
