Renesas Launches Application Processor for Industrial Robots

by Pieter Werner

Renesas Electronics Corporation, a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, has introduced the RZ/T2H microprocessor (MPU), designed to enhance performance in industrial equipment. The RZ/T2H is the company’s highest-performing MPU to date, combining advanced application processing capabilities with real-time control to meet the demands of industrial robots, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motion controllers, and other industrial systems.

The RZ/T2H enables high-speed, precise control of up to nine axes in industrial robot motors. By integrating application processing and motor control functions on a single chip, it eliminates the need for multiple MPUs or additional hardware such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This streamlined design reduces component costs and development time while addressing the increasing complexity required in modern industrial systems.

According to Daryl Khoo, Vice President of Embedded Processing at Renesas, the RZ/T2H builds on the success of earlier models like the RZ/T2M and RZ/T2L. He noted the new MPU’s ability to support nine-axis motor control on a single chip, highlighting its appeal for customers developing advanced industrial motor control and Linux applications.

The RZ/T2H integrates four Arm® Cortex®-A55 CPUs, operating at a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz, for application processing, alongside two Cortex-R52 CPUs for real-time tasks. The real-time processors, with tightly coupled memory, ensure fast and accurate operations required for applications such as motor control, industrial Ethernet protocol processing, and robot trajectory planning.

For network communication, the MPU supports Industrial Ethernet standards, including EtherCAT, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP, alongside the next-generation Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) protocol. Its Ethernet capabilities, featuring multiple ports and integrated switches, provide the flexibility to handle a wide range of industrial communication requirements.

To facilitate adoption, Renesas offers specialized tools and resources, including an out-of-the-box evaluation solution with multi-axis motor control software, inverter boards, and a motion utility tool. Additionally, the Flexible Software Package (FSP) and long-term support for Linux enhance usability and support for development efforts.

Commenting on the release, Micael Borgefeldt, Product Manager at IAR Systems, emphasized the MPU’s potential to simplify multi-core application development in industrial environments, citing its role in advancing innovation and efficiency.

The RZ/T2H is positioned to support the growing demand for automated production and labor-saving solutions in manufacturing, making it a key technology for industrial robots and advanced controller systems.
