The 36th edition of the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) 2024 concluded on October 18 in Abu Dhabi, marking the first time the event was held in the MENA region. Hosted at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC), the conference attracted nearly 10,000 attendees, including visitors, delegates, and participants. The event, held from October 14-18, focused on developments in robotics, intelligent systems, and AI technologies.
The conference featured plenary talks, keynote sessions, and presentations from researchers and industry stakeholders, along with technology demonstrations. Dr. Jorge Manuel Dias, General Chair of IROS 2024, noted the event’s success in terms of attendance, the number of innovations presented, and the interest generated for potential collaborations in robotics.
A plenary session led by Dr. Magnus Egerstedt, Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, focused on the topic of “Coordination to Collaboration in Multi-Robot Systems,” exploring potential applications of multi-robot systems. Keynote sessions addressed various aspects of robotics, including competitions and challenges, with speakers such as Dr. Lakmal Seneviratne from Khalifa University and Pedro U. Lima from the University of Lisbon discussing robotics competitions in Europe.
On the final day, forums covered topics such as marine robotics, AI-enhanced robotics in the workplace, and medical robotics, with contributions from academic institutions and organizations, including NATO’s Science and Technology Organization. Over 500 research papers were presented, covering a wide range of developments in robotics and intelligent systems.
