Perceptive has announced the successful completion of the world’s first fully automated dental procedure on a human using its AI-driven robotic system. The company utilized robotics, artificial intelligence, and 3D volumetric imaging in this procedure. The Perceptive dental robotics system integrates AI-driven 3D imaging software with a robotic arm, initially focusing on restorative dentistry. This technology enhances the speed and precision of dental procedures, such as crown placements, which the system can complete in just 15 minutes, compared to the traditional two office visits.
The system begins with an optical coherence technology (OCT) scan, using Perceptive’s handheld intraoral scanner, which captures detailed 3D images beneath the gum line and through the tooth surface. This imaging capability enables early and accurate diagnoses, allowing patients to better understand their dental conditions.
Dr. Chris Ciriello, CEO and Founder of Perceptive, highlighted the benefits of the system, stating that it improves precision and efficiency in dental procedures, potentially democratizing access to advanced dental care. The technology’s ability to achieve over a 90% accuracy rate in detecting caries without the use of ionizing radiation offers a substantial improvement over conventional 2D X-rays, which typically have an accuracy rate of around 40%.
Notable supporters of Perceptive’s technology include Stephen E. Thorne IV, CEO of PDS Health, and German Gallucci, Chairman of Restorative Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Both have praised the system’s potential to improve patient care and safety. Edward Zuckerberg, a pioneer in dental technology, emphasized the system’s safety features, while Karim Zaklama, a general dentist, noted the system’s ability to enhance patient comfort and streamline procedures.
Perceptive has secured $30 million in funding from investors, including PDS Health, Dr. Ed Zuckerberg, and several venture capital firms. The company’s innovative approach aims to advance dental healthcare by providing scalable, fully automated solutions.
