Aeroporti di Roma (AdR), the operator of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, is using artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to improve the experience for millions of passengers. By incorporating advanced technologies into its operations, AdR aims to streamline services and enhance the efficiency of airport processes.
At the forefront of these efforts is the Innovation Hub, a 650-square-meter facility located within Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport’s Terminal One. Opened in 2022, the hub hosts start-ups each year to develop and test solutions tailored to airport needs. The Innovation Hub focuses on six key areas: improving punctuality, data-driven systems, process automation, energy efficiency, the passenger digital experience, and omnichannel commerce.
One development from this initiative is the deployment of autonomous delivery robots created by the startup Ottonomy. These robots, equipped with 3D lidar sensor technology, navigate the airport to deliver food and beverages to passengers who place orders via QR codes. This innovation aims to reduce wait times and enhance the convenience of food services within the airport.
Real-time information
Another project is the implementation of Airport AI, a system designed to provide near real-time flight information and automated responses to frequently asked questions. This AI-powered solution helps passengers access essential information more quickly and easily, improving overall engagement and satisfaction.
Additionally, AdR has explored the integration of digital wallets, digital passports, and biometric technologies to facilitate seamless passenger movement through the airport. In collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and various other companies, AdR participated in a proof of concept to test these technologies. The initiative aimed to simplify the travel process by enabling passengers to move through different checkpoints more efficiently.
