Santa Monica-based AI startup, rabbit inc., at CES announced the launch of r1, a consumer AI device equipped with a natural-language operating system. The r1 device is designed to simplify the user experience by integrating various applications into one streamlined interface, reducing the need for multiple app interactions.
The device operates on rabbit OS, which is based on the Large Action Model (LAM). LAM, a proprietary foundation model of rabbit inc., aims to understand and mimic human actions in computer interfaces. This technology is designed to infer users’ intentions and behaviors when interacting with apps, and then perform these actions both reliably and quickly.
rabbit inc. states that the r1 device, priced at $199, is now available for pre-sale, with shipments expected to begin in late March 2024.
Jesse Lyu, Founder and CEO of rabbit, commented on the launch, emphasizing the company’s goal to address the complexities and fragmentation caused by the multitude of apps on smartphones. Lyu highlighted the potential of AI in understanding natural language and stated that their Large Action Model goes a step further by generating actions on behalf of users.
The Large Action Model is designed to observe and replicate human interactions with interfaces, adapting to changes in these interfaces. It aims to eliminate the need for users to navigate and operate multiple apps by performing tasks directly within the platform.
rabbit OS introduces “rabbits,” personal AI agents, which are intended to handle a range of digital tasks, extending beyond the capabilities of current voice-based assistants in smart devices. These tasks range from simple information searches to complex activities like travel booking or completing online transactions.
The OS is already trained to work with popular apps, and plans are in place to allow users to train their own “rabbits” for specialized tasks on niche apps and workflows.
Through the “rabbit hole” web portal, users can grant their r1 device access to their existing apps, enabling various functionalities. The OS operates with user permission and does not preemptively store personal identity information or passwords.
The r1 device is described as a compact and portable AI hardware solution, designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering. It features a 2.88-inch touchscreen display, a push-to-talk button, a scroll wheel, and the “rabbit eye” motorized vision system. The device offers Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 4 GB of memory, 128 GB of storage, and a USB-C port. It is designed for all-day battery life and is presented as the first in a series of hardware products from rabbit.
rabbit inc. emphasizes privacy and security in its technology, stating that user credentials for third-party services are not stored by rabbit. All authentication occurs on the respective service’s login systems. The company also asserts compliance with industry standards for data security and encryption. The r1 device is designed with privacy considerations, including a non-recording default state for the microphone and a camera that is physically blocked unless activated by the user.
