A research initiative focusing on the challenges posed by autonomous vehicles (AVs) has been announced. The University of Portsmouth and the University of West London have been awarded funding for this endeavor by the ASIS Foundation. The research will center on the security and regulations surrounding AVs.
The principal objective of this project is to delve into the efficacy of existing regulatory structures and standards that oversee the secure and expanding use of AVs in the coming decade. A primary focus will be on how these regulations address various security-related threats, risks, and opportunities.
Since the late 1990s, there has been a marked uptick in the adoption of AVs. They are now a part of several systems, ranging from transportation and defense to surveillance, encompassing elements like biometric data recognition, safety, and cybersecurity.
This comprehensive research is set to evaluate the multifaceted challenges tied to the deployment of AVs. Among the areas of study are the current legal and ethical landscapes in both civil and military realms, identification and assessment of prevailing regulatory frameworks, insights into upcoming regulations, and an examination of potential threats, especially those concerning intellectual property theft by states and commercial entities.
Professor Peter Lee, who serves as the Director of Security and Risk Research and Innovation at the University of Portsmouth, remarked on the rapid global adoption of AVs. He stated, “The swift advancements in technology have made it challenging for both security experts and regulators to remain abreast of developments. With the continuous evolution of AI in machinery, pivotal matters like human-machine interactivity, predictability, trustworthiness, accountability, and responsibility are now at the forefront. However, the advancements have been inconsistent, and there are no universal standards currently. This research intends to fill this void and provide insights into potential future strategies.”
One of the outcomes of this research will be a comprehensive guide tailored for security practitioners. This guide will empower them with essential tools and knowledge to navigate the complex regulations, standards, and industry frameworks concerning AVs, spanning applications across land, sea, and air.
The approval and allocation of funds for this study underscore its importance in advancing the comprehension of AV regulation and security. Both universities and their research teams are dedicated to unraveling the intricacies of this swiftly evolving domain, aiming to contribute to the development of more secure and safer autonomous vehicle technologies.
